Welcome to the Distributed Systems and Services theme which is part of the Institute for Computational and Systems Science in the School of Computer Science.

We explore emerging issues in the infrastructure and systems performance for the next generation of distributed/Internet computing. The focus is on large-scale, dynamic interactions and resource sharing across different communities and organisations, bringing together computational power, data and human knowledge. Challenges from Big Data and from the need of an intelligent, secure and dependable infrastructure are being tackled by members of this theme. Examples of our recent research advance our understanding in critical issues relating to cloud, social and green computing.

Our projects are often conducted by multidisciplinary teams of researchers all over the world. These collaborations bring together specialists from both industry and academia, with Information and Computer Scientists from the School taking a prominent role. [Nov 2025] Evangelos has been awarded a renewal of his existing UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship for a further three-year period. This fellowship is both prestigious and highly competitive, so many congratulations to Evangelos!
[Nov 2025] Zheng, Xiaoyang and Jie have won one of this year’s HiPEAC Tech Transfer Awards on our ACE3 technology for accelerating LLMs. HiPEAC is an internationally leading consortium in HPC, and Edge and Cloud Computing. Many congratulations to Zheng, Xiaoyang, and Jie!
[3 April 2025] Prof. Zheng Wang has been awarded the highly competitive Royal Society Industry Fellowship for four years. It will enable Zheng to strengthen long-term collaborative links between industry and academia. Many congratulations to Zheng!
[Feb, 2025] Karim has recently been appointed as an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing. Many congratulations to Professor Karim Djemame.

Events (Last 12 months)

[24 April 2026] Academic visit to our school (particularly to the DSS theme) from the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP: https://wasp-sweden.org/), a £400M Swedish research initiative focused on advancing world-leading research in AI, systems, and software. WASP regularly organises international study trips, and as part of this, they are bringing 40+ PhD students to the UK in April 2026, with planned visits to Edinburgh, Newcastle, Sheffield, Manchester, and other cities.
[1 Oct 2025] The Inaugural Lecture presented by Professor Evangelos Pournaras, School of Computer Science will take place in Lecture Theatre 1.01, Esther Simpson Building, with the title “Another Intelligence: Distributed socio-technical systems to trust for a sustainable and democratic society”.
[26 June 2025] The LIDA Data Science Infrastructures Workshop will be held on 26 June 2025 from 9:30-16:00 at the Baines Wing SR (3.06).
[22-25 June 2025] EURO 2025: the 34th European Conference on Operational Research will take place in Leeds 22-25 June 2025. This event is of special significance: 2025 is the 50th Anniversary of the Association of European Operational Research Societies (EURO)!
[4 April 2025] Prof Haibo Chen, an internationally renowned expert in Operating Systems and System Software, will pay us a brief visit this Friday. We have booked Room 2.10 for an informal research meeting on 4th April, starting from 9:30am. Please come to join us in full or partially if you are free.
